Celtic drawn in Group D of the Europa League along with SV Red Bull Salzburg, Dinamo Zagreb and FC Astra Giurgiu.
A far cry from the glamour of the Champions League, Celtic have been drawn into what’s already been dubbed the workmen’s group of this seasons Europa League. Joining the Glasgow giants are teams from Austria, Croatia and Romania. The group is one Celtic must certainly look to advance from.
FC Astra, having knocked out Olympique Lyonnais during qualification, may not be as easy as first appears but over 6 games Celtic should be able to finish in at least second ahead of them and Dinamo Zagreb. FC Salzburg will undoubtedly be the hardest of the ties but having been utterly dismantled by the modest Malmo in the Champions League, it should not be beyond Celtic to finish 1st in the group. The Hoops will be hoping recent arrivals Stefan Scepovic and Mubarak Wakaso can help them to get through this group.
The new signings will be looking to hit the group running should they feature vs Dundee in the early kick-off this Sunday. The Europa will provide Ronny Deila and his Champions League flops (X2) a chance to regain a bit of pride and prove the already large group of doubters than the club are going in the right direction. Celtic will also be boosted by the fact the only shining light in this already horrendous European campaign, Callum McGregor, has signed a new 5 year contract.
