The Derbi della Madonnina
With the International week over it’s straight back to Serie A action this weekend and just to settle us in nicely it’s only the Milan derby this Sunday evening. Once one of the biggest derbies on the planet, the Derbi della Madonnina has lost it’s shine over the past few years, mostly down to the demise of Milan’s biggest two clubs, however this will still be a fiery, passionate affair with lots of incident. AC Milan sit in seventh place, 11 points behind league leaders Juventus, meanwhile their rivals Inter are a point behind them in 11th Place.
Legendary striker Pippo Inzaghi took over from Clarence Seedorf during the summer and the Rossoneri didn’t start the season off too badly winning their first two matches, however the cracks have began to appear in recent weeks and Inzaghi must rally his troops or face falling further behind in their race for a top four finish. In fact Milan are without a win in four Serie A matches, drawing three, including a 2-2 draw with Sampdoria in their last match and a 2-0 defeat at home to newly promoted Palermo. Inzaghi will need to start turning things around or he could find himself yet another in the long line of Berlusconi’s ex employees. Ahead of Sunday evening’s derby, Inzaghi called for patience from the Milan supporters;
“I’ve had some great moments already and now I am enjoying the adventure to the full, but I don’t expect to win trophies straight away,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Despite only sitting in seventh place, there has been some improvement from the Rossoneri, albeit only slightly. With too many average players in his side, I just don’t know if Pippo has the tools at his disposal to set his team in the right direction, with some fans already on his back a victory this Sunday evening would be a perfect catalyst for his side to push on and for the fans to get right behind him.
Possible AC Milan starting XI:
Mazzarri Out, Mancini In
Unfortunately for Inter fans it has been another frustrating and lackluster start to the season and the board have decided to act quickly by sacking coach Walter Mazzarri and appointing coach Roberto Mancini. I still feel that Walter Mazzarri is an excellent coach but it just wasn’t working out for him at the Giuseppe Meazza. I’m not convinced Mancini is the right man to replace him in the hot seat but with the players he has at his disposal, some very good ones at that, he certainly has the tools to do the job, only time will tell if he is the right man to do it.
Without a win in their last two and already five points off the Champions League places, that seems a distant possibility at the moment, but a victory over their bitter rivals this weekend could see them leapfrog AC Milan and keep in contention for European football next season. Speaking at his unveiling as new coach last week, Mancini stated that he hopes to bring back the winning mentality to the club:
“It’s up to us to find that spark again, bring the fans back to the stadium and return to winning ways.I’m really happy to be here. If I’ve come back it must mean that I’ve done something right elsewhere, that’s all that matters.”
“I think we can write another success story. I believe in this club’s plans. We have to knuckle down because if we work hard we can achieve great things.”
Possible Inter Starting XI:
- Inter have won four of the last six meetings between the sides.
- There have been 282 official matches between the sides, Inter have a slight edge with 76 wins over AC Milan’s 74 wins.
- The first derby match between the two Milanese rivals was held in 1908.
90MinuteCynic Prediction AC Milan 0-1 Inter
The Milan derby is always very difficult to call and with both teams in a bit of turmoil at the moment it makes it even more difficult. Mancini might not have been the most adventurous coach throughout his career but he should bring back some much-needed solidity to a shaky Inter defence. I think this will be very close and could end a draw but I’ll stick my neck out and go for a narrow Inter win.
