It’s that time of the year when football fans all over the globe contemplate their Fantasy Football team for the upcoming season. Regular contributor Niall McCloskey took on the challenge for us and came up with a team of superstars that he is convinced will net 90MinuteCynic the big bucks next season.
After much deliberation Mr McCloskey settled on a 4-2-3-1 formation which is balanced with honest professionals, Galacticos and egomaniacal madmen.
At 31, the Spain and Real Madrid number one has already amassed an incredible 130 caps for his country. One of the worlds best goalkeepers, Casillas will protect the goal like a lioness protecting her cubs.
The right back position will be occupied by the Swiss international, Stefan Lichtsteiner. A stalwart at Juventus he is just as happy bombing forward as he is at defending and will give good cover on the right hand side.
One of only two South Americans in the team, the Brazilian is a true modern day centre back. Taking a place in the AC Milan defence brings with it a unique pressure that Thiago deals with well.
As comfortable at right back as he is at the centre of defence, Sergio Ramos is as adaptable as a travel plug. Strong in the tackle and comfortable on the ball he will compliment Thiago well.
The Champions League final showed how good Ashley Cole still is at left back. The older he has become, the smarter his game has gotten. Other than the fact he dumped Cheryl, his decision making is second to none.
The Swiss midfielder will be doing the grunt work in midfield, protecting the defence and getting the ball to the more creative players. The 27 year old Napoli player is key to the team playing as a unit.
Although he looks like he should be the lead singer of an Emo band, Javi Marinez is actually one of the best midfielders in the world. His performances for Athletic Bilbao have been sensational and against Manchester United in the Europa league he dominated.
Its Messi, we all know who he is……best player in the world etc.
The Billy Corgan lookalike is continually ranked in the top midfielder lists season upon season. Iniesta will be key to Spain at Euro 2012 and in our team will have the responsibility of subtly unlocking the opposition defences.
THE GREATEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD……..behind Messi. Power, Pace and technique if he lived at any other time he would be the best……but second is still good, right?
This season was the end of his feat of 8 league titles in a row at different clubs. Zlatan has his critics but when he is on form he is truly devastating. A great touch for a big man (Oh, dear) and comfortable with both feet, his attitude is just as stinging as his shot.
Stefan Lichtsteiner Thiago Silva Sergio Ramos Ashley Cole
Gokhan Inler Javi Martinez
Messi Andres Iniesta Ronaldo
